Our goal in second grade is to enhance skills taught in first grade.  We use the State Curriculum as a guide in planning daily lessons.  During the second semester, students prepare for advancement to grade three.
In our self-contained classes, subjects taught are:

Reading
AR testing calculates comprehension with the use of computer tests.  There are weekly introductions of stories (vocabulary).  Coordination of Spelling word list and phonetic drills is provided in the students' texts.

Math
Manipulatives are used to provide hands-on reinforcement of skills taught.

Phonics
Sight words and phonics are used in the introduction of new words.

Grammar
The parts of speech as well as sentence and paragraph structure are reviewed daily.

Science/Social Studies
Group activities reinforce interests in materials covered in students' texts.

Handwriting
Manuscript is reinforced in writing sentences and stories with Zaner-Bloser as our guide.  We stress the importance of making numbers legible in math activities.

* Parents are encouraged to review the activities covered during the day with their child each night.

* Folders are sent home weekly with graded work, word lists, and teacher/parent communication.
